How to Clean and Maintain Your Commercial Gaskets

Your refrigeration gaskets are working 24/7—but they’re often the last thing anyone thinks to clean or maintain. A little regular attention can go a long way in keeping them functional, flexible, and sealing tight.

Here’s a quick guide to keeping your gaskets in top shape.

Wipe Them Down Weekly

Use a mild soap and warm water to clean the gasket surface. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or anything abrasive.
Why? Harsh cleaners can break down the rubber or cause it to dry out and crack prematurely.

Don’t forget the folds—dirt and grease love to hide in the creases.

Keep Them Dry

After cleaning, always dry the gasket completely. Moisture left behind can lead to mold growth, especially in warmer environments.
If mold does appear, clean with a 1:1 mixture of vinegar and water—never straight bleach.

Watch for Cracks or Stiff Spots

Over time, gaskets can get brittle or start to crack. Press gently along the edge of the seal and feel for stiffness or dryness.
If you spot cracks or areas that won’t seal properly anymore, it may be time to replace.

Don’t Overload or Slam the Door

Overstuffed coolers or staff slamming doors can warp the gasket’s shape over time. Make sure the door closes fully and seals evenly all around.

Use Food-Safe Gasket Lubricant (Optional)

There are food-safe silicone lubricants designed to keep rubber seals soft and pliable. If your gasket is in a high-use area or exposed to lots of grease, a little extra conditioning can help extend its life.

The Bottom Line

Clean gaskets don’t just look better—they last longer, seal tighter, and help keep your cold storage efficient.
